Construction Update | Jan. 29, 2026
Freeway Park Dr. – Flagging Operations
Crews will be completing daytime flagging operations along Freeway Park Dr. beginning today, Thursday, Jan. 29 and Friday, Jan. 30 to support centerline roadway operations for utility work.
Additionally, crews are finishing up flatwork activities along Freeway Park Dr. through mid-February. This work includes concrete-related improvements such as sidewalk repairs, and spot treatments to finished surfaces. Drivers should expect minimal to light delays in the area. Business access will be maintained.

Ongoing Activities
Crews are continuing work along 5600 South (SR-97) under I-15 in the SPUI (Single Point Urban Interchange) area, which is an interchange design where traffic entering and exiting the freeway is controlled through one main signalized intersection. Crews are installing curb and gutter, completing removals, finishing earthwork and slopes. In addition, crews are completing hardware installation on bridge girders (beams) and setting junction boxes in preparation for upcoming concrete work. Once prep work is complete, final boxes will be set and UDOT fiber will be installed running both east and west.
With the new traffic pattern in place, drivers can expect occasional lane shifts, changing traffic movements, and construction equipment and crew members near the roadway. Please slow down, stay alert, and follow all posted signs while traveling through the area.

5600 South and Riverdale Rd. – Intersection & Signal Construction
Crews are completing signal and pedestrian improvements at the intersection of 5600 South and Riverdale Rd. as part of the ongoing construction project. This includes work near the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) bridge and is expected to continue through the winter months.
Additional signal work will take place along Riverdale Rd. During the next couple of weeks, drivers should expect a temporary right-turn closure while crews complete installation and foundation placement. As part of the permanent signal and roadway upgrades, crews will also be removing existing traffic-management equipment poles. Drivers and pedestrians are encouraged to plan ahead and use caution in the work zone.

I-15 & 5600 South Corridor – Sign Installation
Crews will be installing permanent signage throughout the I-15 & 5600 South (SR-97) corridor over the coming months.
Installation work will begin this month on I-15 at 5600 South (SR-97), where road and street signs will be permanently placed. After completing this phase, crews will shift their work along 5600 South, moving from 2700 West to 3500 West. This portion of the work is anticipated to occur during the February-March timeframe. Please be aware of crews working in the area and follow posted signage for safety.
Final Paving Resumes This Spring on 5600 South & 1900 West
Crews will complete the remaining paving work in the spring, once warmer temperatures return. Asphalt paving requires specific temperature conditions to ensure long-lasting, high-quality results. While drivers may notice unfinished areas near 1900 West and 5600 South intersection, this work is intentional and temporary.
Why Paving Waits for Warmer Weather
Asphalt is produced at facilities called hot plants, where aggregates (rock and sand) are heated and mixed with liquid asphalt binder. This material must stay hot from the plant to the roadway so it can be properly placed, compacted, and bonded. Completing this work during the winter months can lead to cracks, poor compaction, and a shorter pavement lifespan. UDOT crews source asphalt from certified local hot plants that meet quality and safety standards, ensuring roads are built to last once conditions are right. Waiting for spring temperatures helps deliver smoother, safer, and more durable roads for Utah drivers.

5600 South – Intermediate Lane Closures
Through the winter months, crews will implement occasional intermediate lane closures along 5600 South in both directions to accommodate finalizing flatwork (curb, gutter, sidewalk) between 2700 West and 3500 West. Crews will maintain one lane in each direction. Drivers should plan for slower traffic and delays during peak commute hours.

Pedestrian Safe Walking Routes
Safe walking routes were updated to include the activated HAWK (High-Intensity Activated crossWalk) light at 2100 West along 5600 South. Drivers: Slow down and be aware of the designated safe walking routes along 5600 South. Stay alert, watch for students and pedestrians in the area.
Pedestrian Safety
Prioritize pedestrian safety while navigating through our work zones. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Stay Alert – always be aware of your surroundings. Look out for construction signs, workers, and potential hazards
- Use Designated Pathways – these paths are designated to keep you safe from construction activities
- Avoid Distractions – Refrain from using your phone or wearing headphones while walking through construction areas
- Wear Visible Clothing – Wear bright or reflective clothing, this can help ensure your seen by workers and drivers
