Construction Update | May 8, 2025

I-15 SB Lane Closure

Starting Friday, May 8, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, crews will close the furthest west travel lane of southbound I-15 to accommodate the concrete placement for the bridge deck on the new structure. Drivers should expect minor to intermittent delays during this time.

New Access to Freeway Park Dr. and Hill Air Force Base

Drivers can anticipate a new access route to and from Freeway Park Dr., as well as access to Hill Air Force Base (HAFB) at Missile Way intersection. The photo simulation graphic below illustrates the new access points that drivers can expect before the end of the month in the roadway final configuration. Please note the highlighted Collector Distributor (CD) road into Riverdale will be accessible in the fall.

A video simulation will be shared in future updates to help drivers understand how to navigate these new routes.

5600 South – Traffic Shift

Traffic will be shifted the north side of 5600 South (SR-97) on the new pavement near the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) bridge between 2800 W and 2425 W Thursday, May 8. Crews will complete demolition and excavation activities before beginning the reconstruction of the bridge on the south side of 5600 South, which is expected to continue through 2025. Drivers should anticipate a new traffic pattern and short-term delays.

Freeway Park Dr.

Crews will shift traffic to the west side of Freeway Park Dr., next week, while they complete the sidewalk, walls and shoulder work along the east side of the road. Drivers can expect one-way traffic and short-term delays.

Ongoing Work

5600 South Corridor

Crews will continue utility and excavation work throughout the 5600 South (SR-97) corridor and 1900 West (SR-126). Crews will temporary close some adjacent streets throughout the corridor to complete some final irrigation work. Drivers use alernate routes and expect delays.

  • 2100 West* (North side) – Closed April 25 – May 16
  • 2500 West* (North side) – Closed through May 8
  • 2050 West* – Closed through late spring/early summer

Pedestrian Safe Walking Routes

Crews have removed the safe walking route at 2100 West along 5600 South. Pedestrians heading to Roy Jr. High are encouraged to use the signalized crossing and marked crosswalk at 2200 West for added safety. This route will remain in effect until fall 2025.

Drivers: Slow down and be aware of the designated safe walking routes along 5600 South. Please stay alert, watch for students traveling in the area.

Pedestrian Safety

As the weather warms up, it's crucial to prioritize pedestrian safety while navigating through our work zones. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Stay Alert – always be aware of your surroundings. Look out for construction signs, workers, and potential hazards
  • Use Designated Pathways – these paths are designated to keep you safe from construction activities
  • Avoid Distractions – Refrain from using your phone or wearing headphones while walking through construction areas
  • Wear Visible Clothing – Wear bright or reflective clothing, this can help ensure your seen by workers and drivers

Let's work together to keep everyone safe!

I-15 at 5600 South - Bridge Beam Installation Highlights

Over the course of four nights, approximately 20 dedicated crew members installed eight bridge girders (beams) on the new I-15 structure at 5600 South earlier this month.

Each girder weighs about 118,000 pounds and spans an impressive 211 feet. Using large cranes designed for heavy lifting, skilled professionals ensured each beam was safely and accurately positioned to meet engineering standards. Ironworkers played a vital role in fabricating and installing the steel beams, contributing to the bridge's safety and durability for vehicles and pedestrians. Despite colder temperatures, the crews used advanced equipment and techiniques to navigate challenging weather conditions while maintaining safety standards.

Check out some of the highlights below from the project, including the use of cranes, hands on application, and advanced equipment to complete work under challenging conditions.

How can I utilize the pedestrian bridge across 5600 South?

Crews are hard at work on the brand-new pedestrian bridge in Roy City. We're excited for you to start using it! Check out the animation below to see how you can take advantage of this addition to the community.

The bridge over 5600 South is scheduled to be open to pedestrians in spring 2025.
