Project Description:

UDOT is reconstructing the eastbound and westbound I-84 Weber River/Union Pacific Railroad bridges two miles east from the mouth of Weber Canyon in Weber County.  

This project will provide two new structures at this location, each with an anticipated service life of 75 years. These new bridges will also provide updated typical sections, along with improved detailing and geometry, resulting in a safer and more efficient facility for the traveling public.

Phase 1 Traffic Restrictions during Phase 1 & 2 through Oct 2026

Additional Lane Closures:

Traffic Alert:  Friday Night, July 31 | Monday - Wednesday Night(s), August 3 - 6 | Eastbound Single Lane Closure; Expect light delays.  More details and lane restrictions on [ Impacts and Updates Tab ]

Additional eastbound(EB) and occasional westbound(WB) shoulder and outside lane closures may be necessary on occasion over the next several months.  The next round is anticipated to return in August 2026 with primarily nighttime lane closures.  We will keep you updated as we receive updated information.  We will share any upcoming closures via the website, social media, and UDOT Traffic app as they become available.  Closures schedules are permitted as weather and material availability permits. Drivers should be prepared for barrels on the roadway to guide them into the open lanes past the construction zone. 

Walking Path Closed:

The walking/bike trail beneath I-84 along the river is currently closed for your safety while construction is ongoing. Please stay tuned for updates on when the trail will reopen.

Workdays: Monday - Friday 

Weekends as necessary (no holidays)

Hours: Sunrise - Sunset; Occasional Nightwork

Schedules are subject to change due to weather conditions and material availability.

Phase 2 - Active Construction

Phase 2 (Jun. 2025 – Oct. 2026): Crews will continue building the new eastbound bridge foundation, place the girders and form the deck. Occasional EB single-lane and full nighttime closures possible.  Times will vary between nighttime and daytime hours.

Daytime work continues off-road utilizing heavy equipment, including a crane. Occasional nighttime work is expected. 

Note: Additional nighttime EB (and occasional WB) single lane closures are forecast to return in by late-July.  The next EB outside single lane closure is schedule for Friday Night, July 31, 8pm - 5am.  Please stay tuned for additional updates.

*During single lane closures, the open lane will be restricted to 12 feet wide. For special wide-load accommodations, please contact the project hotline at 801-838-8361.

Project Milestones

  • Traffic Crossover (Oct. 2026 – Aug. 2027):
    • Eastbound I-84: Two lanes will remain open with minimal delays.

    • Westbound I-84: Reduced to one lane at all times. Expect slower travel and delays.

 

  • Phase 3 (Oct. 2026 - Sep. 2027): Crews will demo the old EB bridge and build the new westbound bridge. with finishing work and inspections completed by Fall 2027.

  • Phase 1 (Mar – May 2025):

    • Most work happens beneath the I-84 bridges

    • Temporary river bridges installed

  • Phase 2 (through October 2026)

    • South side retaining wall complete providing room for new eastbound bridge approach

    • New EB bridge foundation structures complete

    • New EB bridge girders set onto bridge foundation
