Construction Update | Nov. 4, 2024

I-15 Southbound Crossover

Beginning the night of Friday, Nov. 8, crews will have a temporary traffic pattern in place to help them widen and reconstruct the southbound roadway and bridge structure.  All lanes of travel will be maintained. Drivers use caution and expect a new traffic pattern through spring 2025.

5600 South - Traffic Shift

Traffic shifted to the south side of 5600 South (SR-97) on the new pavement between 3500 W and 2700 W on Friday, Nov. 1. Crews will begin milling and excavation activities along the north side of 5600 South through 2025. The project team will communicate directly with property owners regarding the restoration of driveway approaches, curbs, gutters and park strips.

The Safe Walking Routes will be updated to reflect the traffic changes and distributed to the Weber School District and local schools. More information will be provided in future updates.

Ongoing Work

1900 West Traffic Shift

North and southbound travel lanes will be reduced to one lane along 1900 West between 2400 North and 5700 South to accommodate drainage activities. This work began on Oct. 28 and will continue through December. Northbound left turns to 6000 South will be restricted. Business access will remain open. Drivers can expect a new traffic pattern and heavy delays during peak travel times. Plan ahead and drive with caution.

Refer to the graphic below for the temporary traffic pattern.

5600 South (SR-97) Pedestrian Bridge

The steel trusses for the pedestrian bridge at the intersection of 5600 South and 2700 West arrived last week and was installed in it's final position on the bridge supports on Friday, Oct. 25. During this time, 5600 South was closed in both directions for short, intermittent periods as crews use a crane to position the steel trusses over all lanes of traffic.

The bridge over 5600 South is scheduled to be open to pedestrians in spring 2025.

Have you noticed the dirt piled up so high at the Union Pacific Railroad Bridge along 5600 South?

As the crews continue to work on the north side of the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) bridge, a geotechnical surcharge—often referred to as "dirt"—is being applied. This surcharge involves placing an additional load on the ground surface to reduce the long lasting settlement of the roadway. It is crucial for ensuring the long-term stability and performance of the roadway pavement.

The surcharge was placed in September and is scheduled to remain in place on the bridge for 100 days to minimize future settlement of the roadway. After this 100-day period, crews will remove the surcharge, construct the first phase of the bridge, and prepare for roadway and paving activities.

5600 South (SR-97)*

Drivers can expect lane shifts, occasional flagging operations, adjacent street closures, occasional nighttime operations, and short-term delays along the corridor.

Crews will be completing utility activities along 5600 South at 2700 West (south side) from Friday, Oct. 25. Drivers should use alternate routes and expect delays through Nov. 1. Safe walking routes will be maintained.

In partnership with Roy City, crews are continuing the installation of a new waterline along 5600 South. Work is taking place during daytime hours approximately (9 a.m. – 5 p.m.). This work will be a moving operation and take place in various locations throughout the corridor.

Crews will temporarily close intermittent locations throughout the corridor. A flyer will be distributed to notify impacted neighborhood residents of culinary water shut-offs and road closuresWork is expected to continue through October.

Along Wardleigh Road to Missile Way*

Crews will complete roadway prep and paving activities along 5600 South between the Freeway Park Dr. and Missile Way intersection through October. Drivers can expect a new traffic shift configuration and minimal delays.

I-15 NB Structure and CD Bridge at 5600 South (SR-97)*

Crews are continuing to build retaining walls and forming the approaches around the Collector Distributor (CD) bridge and finishing paving and drainage work along the I-15 NB structure and excavating out the median through October. Drivers can expect nighttime operations and minimal delays.

Along 5600 South (from 3675 W to 3500 W) – Pedestrian and Business Access

The sidewalk on the south side from 3675 W to 3500 W along 5600 South is closed to prepare for an upcoming traffic shift, that began on Friday, Oct. 4. The closure will last for approximately 3 weeks. Business access will be restricted one-way traffic only.

Along 5600 S and 3500 W intersection facing west.

Along 5600 South at 2200 West – Safe Walking Route will be Temporarily Closed

Crews completed excavation and paving activities earlier this week! The roadway intersection is now open. All pedestrians utilizing the safe walking route on the south side will be detoured to 2100 West through October. The north side of the 2200 West intersection will remain open.

Drivers– please use caution, drive slow in school zones, obey posted signage, and yield to pedestrians.

Did You See The New Shared Use Path Along 5600 South?

The new shared-use path along the south side of 5600 South (SR-97) offers a 4-foot park strip and a paved 10-foot trail for all members of the community.

Asphalt provides a great cost-to-lifespan ratio. It sets quickly and can be used by both bikers and pedestrians the next day. It's a very user-friendly surface, providing a smooth, quiet, continuous path with no joints for a more enjoyable cycling or rollerblading experience. Asphalt is also easy and inexpensive to repair, so you don't have to repave the entire route for a small crack. Compared to concrete, asphalt is a safer option. Porous asphalt, in particular, resists freezing and snow buildup, allowing snow to melt and drain away faster.

NOTE: As changes with the traffic shift on 5600 South approach, we will be distributing updated Safe Walking Route information and will be working with the schools and district for messaging and outreach prior to implementation.

The trail closure is in place through late fall 2024. Pedestrians are encouraged to detour via 2700 W.
