Project Overview

Construction will begin in April on safety improvements to the U.S. Route 89 (US-89) and U.S. Route 6 (US-6) intersection, also known as Thistle Junction.

The project will replace the existing T-intersection with a grade-separated interchange to improve safety. US-6 will be kept at the current grade, and US-89 will be routed through a new underpass underneath US-6. Crews will also build new on- and off-ramps for US-6 and US-89 to provide safer, more efficient merging movements for drivers.

Key improvements include:

  • Constructing an underpass for US-89 to provide a grade-separated crossing for traffic
  • Reconstructing turning movements with longer acceleration and deceleration lanes

The project team plans to have a fully functioning interchange open by mid-November 2026. Additional work will take place in Spring 2027 after a winter shutdown.

What to Expect

Construction began on Monday, April 27.

Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

Traffic on US-6 is reduced to one 10-foot lane in each direction at all times and shifted to the north so the earthwork and bridge construction can be done on the south side. Travel through the junction will be maintained in all directions on US-6 and US-89 throughout construction, but capacity will be reduced to a single lane in each direction.

We anticipate this lane restriction will create delays, especially at peak travel times. To minimize your inconvenience, we encourage you to:

  • Select alternate routes whenever possible.
  • Adjust your trips to avoid peak travel times.
  • Use zipper merging at the lane restriction to get through the work zone as quickly as possible.
  • Check the UDOT Traffic Alert system for current travel conditions at www.udottraffic.utah.gov/.
