The US-40 Fiber Optics project will install middle-mile fiber optics to support last-mile connectivity to communities across northeastern Utah, the Uinta Basin and Ute tribal lands.
US-40 Fiber Optics
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) will begin construction on U.S. Highway 40 between Heber City and the Colorado state line beginning January 2026 to install middle-mile fiber optics, which will support improved internet access for communities across northeastern Utah.
Crews will dig trenches and drill underground along the shoulder of US-40 to install new fiber optic cable and protective conduit throughout the project area.
This project is part of UDOT’s ongoing effort to expand and modernize Utah’s fiber optic network. The new infrastructure will enhance broadband connectivity in rural areas and support UDOT’s Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). In total, the project will install more than 130 miles of new fiber optic cable.
What to expect during construction:
- Work will be segmented along US-40, with multiple active work zones possible at the same time
- Initial construction will occur between Heber City and Daniels Summit.
- Reduced speed limits in active work zones; normal speeds where work is not underway.
- Lane widths may be reduced to 11 feet with a 2-foot shoulder.
- One-way traffic with flaggers may be required when fiber crosses under US-40.
- Intermittent flagging possible as construction vehicles enter and exit work zones.
- Construction hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
