Project Overview

We are adding two more travel lanes on U.S. Highway 189 (US-189) between Wallsburg and Charleston to reduce congestion and increase safety for drivers. This is the last stretch of US-189 in this area with only one lane each way. When finished, US-189 will have two travel lanes in each direction from Provo to Heber City.

The main focus of the project is building the new travel lanes into the eastern hillside as a separate and elevated road, known as a split highway, similar to sections of US-189 in Provo Canyon. An example of what the split highway could look like when finished is shown below.

Other key features being built with this project include:

  • New traffic signal at the intersection of US-189 and SR-113

  • Improved access and parking at the Island Beach Day Use Area, including longer acceleration and deceleration lanes and a new parking lot

  • Better sight lines through the curved section along US-189

  • New wildlife fencing to protect drivers and animals

Construction started in October 2025 and is expected to wrap up in the fall 2027.
