University Avenue Bridge Work
University Avenue (US-189) is a vital north–south travel corridor in Provo and the primary corridor connecting the Orem–Provo area to the Heber Valley. In the area of 600 South in Provo, the roadway crosses over the Union Pacific Railroad switching yard and the current end-of-line for UTA's FrontRunner network. The viaduct was originally built in 1966 and has been rehabilitated several times during the past 60 years, including repairs that were completed in late 2020.
Replacing the viaduct will provide a bridge that meets current design standards, improves visibility for drivers and safety for all users. The new bridge will have a service life of approximately 75 years.
Maintaining this crossing is vital to the surrounding area and a key transportation facility for the traveling public. The new bridge features improved pedestrian connectivity from 920 South to 400 South, with eight feet wide sidewalks and bike lanes in both directions, greatly benefiting all users of the bridge. We are committed to designing transportation infrastructure that safely and efficiently accommodates all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, and vehicles.
