PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is improving the eastbound and westbound I-80 bridges at Echo (milepost 168) and Wanship (milepost 155) and the I-84 bridges at Echo (milepost 119) in Summit County.

The first phase of work began on westbound I-80 bridge at Echo in October 2022 and continued through November 2022. This work included installing new barriers or guardrails at some locations and replacing the bridge approach slabs – the part of the structure that carries traffic between the road and the top of the bridge.

The second phase of work resumed late April and included the I-80 bridges over Echo Dam Road and SR-32 in Wanship and the I-84 bridges over Echo Frontage Road. Construction continued through mid-June 2023.

I-80 Bridges at Echo and Wanship

Crews completed the second phase of work by replacing smaller components on the I-80 bridges such as bearings and compression joints, patching potholes, and placing a polymer overlay on the bridge approaches that seals and protects the bridge to extend the life of the structure.

To accommodate this work, crews intermittently reduced the I-80 bridges over Echo Dam Road and SR-32 in Wanship to one lane.

I-84 Bridges at Echo

Once work on the I-80 bridges was complete, the project team started working on the I-84 bridges. Work on the I-84 bridges included removing and replacing the top layer of pavement on the bridge decks.

To accommodate this work, crews reduced the I-84 bridges over Echo Frontage Road to one lane. Traffic restrictions were in place 24/7.
