10/7/24 Nearby Project Impacts: North Temple/Main Street will be closed nightly for the Salt Lake Temple Renovation project starting Oct. 7. Visit the Nearby Projects and Traffic Impacts tab for more information.

Project Overview

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), in partnership with the Capitol Preservation Board (CPB) and the Utah Division of Facilities and Construction Management (DFCM), is building a new, single-lane roundabout at State Street and 300 North in Salt Lake City, in front of the Utah State Capitol building.

The roundabout is designed to enhance safety at this busy intersection for all users.

In coordination with the roundabout project, the DFCM is relocating the State of Utah wall to allow more space for gatherings and photography opportunities. These efforts will combine to create a welcoming environment for residents and Capitol visitors.

Intersection Closure

For crews to be able to build the roundabout safely and efficiently, the State Street and 300 North intersection will be closed to traffic from as early as Sept. 23, 2024, through mid-December 2024. Drivers should use Main Street/Columbus Street as alternate routes to the Capitol building, as shown in the map below. East Capitol Street, 300 North, Hillside Avenue and 200 North are local traffic only.

Please drive slowly and carefully in the area, and observe all posted detour signage.

Pedestrian Information

The work zone will be fenced off and inaccessible to pedestrians and cyclists. Please obey all posted signage and do not enter the active work zone. Crosswalks east and west of the intersection will be available.

The southeast sidewalk will close on Thursday, Oct. 3. Pedestrians should follow the posted signage and use the southwest sidewalk while the closure is in place.

State of Utah employees and Capitol visitors should access campus buildings by using the routes shown in the map below.
