Project Overview

UDOT has completed a project to install new sidewalk along both sides of 5400 South (SR-173) between Canal Street and 700 West in Taylorsville and Murray. This work also included bus stop improvements, new storm drain, updated crosswalk markings and road messages, and new curb and gutter.

The goal of this sidewalk project was to improve storm water drainage and provide a safer pedestrian and transit user experience for residents in the area.

Project Timeline

• February 9, 2026: Crews started at Canal Street replacing a few segments of aging storm drain pipe. This work happened ahead of curb and gutter installation and required lane closures to complete safely.
• Late February to early May 2026: Our crews installed new sidewalk, curb, and gutter to provide safer pedestrian access between Taylorsville and Murray and upgrade existing bus stops throughout the project area to be more comfortable and accessible.
• May 2026: Crews completed the project by restoring the asphalt where they worked on 5400 South and restriping the road to include dedicated bike lanes, giving residents in the area safer and easier access via walking, biking, or public transit, to the planned 3,100 miles of the Utah Trail Network.
• September 2026: Crews will return to the project area to place native seeding in the landscape areas alongside the new sidewalk.
