Project Overview

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is conducting emergency work on approximately 17 miles of State Route 153 in Beaver Canyon following significant damage caused by flooding and runoff from the Beaver Mountain Fire burn scar.

Several sections of SR-153 have been severely damaged, including areas where portions of the roadway have washed away or been significantly undermined. The full extent of the damage is still being evaluated, and additional damage may occur as rain and runoff continue.

UDOT has closed SR-153 with gates at approximately Milepost 3 and Milepost 14.5 to restrict access to the affected area. The closure is necessary because conditions in the canyon remain hazardous, with multiple risks to the public, including unstable roadway, ongoing runoff, damaged infrastructure, and active fire-related hazards. Construction activities and heavy equipment will also be operating within the project area.

The public is prohibited from entering the closed area or bypassing the gates. The closure will remain in place to protect the public and construction crews while emergency work is underway.

UDOT and its construction partners are working to evaluate the damage, stabilize critical areas, restore limited access where possible, and develop permanent repairs. The timing and extent of the repairs will depend on site conditions, continued damage, design requirements, and other factors.

The situation is continuing to develop. UDOT will update this website regularly as conditions change and additional information becomes available.

Project Timeline

UDOT is currently focused on the immediate priority of restoring limited access for property owners and other authorized users in the affected area. This work is focused on providing safe, controlled access where conditions allow and will not reopen SR-153 to general public traffic at this time.

This limited access will be temporary and will be discontinued when winter conditions make continued access unsafe or impractical. UDOT is not able to maintain this access through the winter.

Once immediate access needs are addressed, UDOT will focus on developing and constructing a permanent solution for SR-153. The extent and design of the permanent repairs are still being evaluated as conditions in the canyon continue to change.

UDOT will provide additional information as the project develops and the permanent repair approach and schedule become more defined.
