US-189 | Provo Canyon Barrier | Safety Project
US-189 | Provo Canyon Barrier | Safety Project
Enhancing safety on US-189 in Provo Canyon by installing a new median barrier to better protect travelers.
2025 Provo Canyon Barrier Safety Project Overview
This project is the second phase of an ongoing effort to improve safety along US-189 in Provo Canyon. Work items include replacing the existing median barrier with improved 42-inch concrete barrier between the north and south travel lanes as well as making drainage improvements.
- Median barriers help prevent vehicles from crossing over into oncoming traffic, significantly reducing, if not eliminating, the risk of head-on collisions.
- Crash cushions are installed at the end sections of the barrier as a buffer zone in the case of an accident to help gradually decelerate a vehicle and reduce the force of an impact with a fixed object like the median barrier, ultimately minimizing the severity of injury. See the example below.
- Drainage improvements include installing drains along the median barrier to catch runoff water and direct it away from the road surface. The drain pipes will also be rehabilitated to improve their efficiency.
This project is expected to be complete by mid-September 2025.
