Project Overview

UDOT has modified the initial proposed design to reflect feedback gathered from the community during the public comment period which closed on September 30, 2025. As a result, the 42-inch concrete median barrier will be constructed along US-189 in two segments: between 3000 South and 2400 South, and between South Field Road and the southern border of the Wasatch Rock Products property.

The addition of this median barrier will separate traffic traveling in opposite directions and reduce the risk of fatal and serious injury crashes that occur when vehicles crossover into oncoming traffic or turn left at unsignalized locations. The barriers will consolidate left turns to specific intersections and access points: 3000 South, 2400 South, and South Field Road.

This is a federally funded project sponsored by the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), whose purpose is to achieve a significant reduction in traffic fatalities and serious injuries on public roads.

UDOT hosted an in-person public meeting on September 16, 2025, to provide historic crash data, share information about the safety benefits and operational improvements of the proposed median barriers, and gather input from the community. Visit the "Public Meetings" tab for meeting details.

The environmental review, consultation, and other actions required by applicable Federal environmental laws for this project are being, or have been, carried out by UDOT pursuant to 23 U.S.C. 327 and a Memorandum of Understanding dated June 12, 2023, and executed by FHWA and UDOT.
