Overview

Project Overview

The Emigration Canyon Road Improvement Project is being sponsored by the City of Emigration Canyon in partnership with the Greater Salt Lake Municipal Services District (MSD).This project is funded with $6.5 million federal dollars. The project is managed by the MSD with full project oversight from the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and the Wasatch Front Regional Council (WFRC).

We are in the first phase of the project, which includes studying existing conditions, including traffic, safety, right-of-way, recreation, land use, parking, etc., and preliminary design of potential safety improvements. The project area encompasses 1.8 miles of Emigration Canyon Road between approximately 5700 East (new red wall) to just past Pinecrest Canyon Road (the horseshoe). Proposed safety improvements include:

  • Dedicated bike lanes

  • Striping & signage of bike lanes

Associated improvements may include:

  • Barrier replacement
  • Slope stabilization
  • Drainage system upgrades

The type of environmental document being completed is a Categorical Exclusion (commonly called a CE) and is done when potential actions -- proposed safety improvements -- are not anticipated to significantly affect the human environment.

In addition to the completion of the CE, this project includes preliminary design of bike lanes, and potential drainage and slope stabilization improvements. The preliminary design is being done to help the team understand potential impacts of the proposed improvements.

When the document is nearing completion, it will be available for review and a public hearing will be held. The completion of the CE and preliminary design is the end of Phase 1.
