Project Overview
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is continuing its efforts to improve northbound I-15 in Salt Lake County by extending the existing collector-distributor (C-D) system from 9000 South in Sandy to Bangerter Highway in Draper. This project will improve safety and regional mobility and reduce congestion for drivers on northbound I-15. Construction could begin as early as 2031.
The project area starts in Sandy on northbound I-15 and will travel north to Bangerter Highway in Draper. The area also includes the intersections from 12300 South to 9400 South.
What is a Collector-Distributor System?
C-D systems parallel the freeway and connect to more than one on-and-off ramp. The system reduces congestion by allowing mainline traffic to bypass vehicles entering and exiting the freeway.
The collector-distributor system is planned for the project to help with congestion. There will be an entrance from the freeway to the collector-distributor system that will connect to the existing interchanges from 12300 South to 9000 South. The collector-distributor system will start after entering the freeway from Bangerter Highway going northbound and end at 9000 South.
Environmental Re-Evaluation
UDOT updated the 2028 EA to re-evaluate the second phase of the project (the collector-distributor system between 9000 South and I-215). To meet 2050 traffic needs, UDOT evaluated an additional lane on the collector-distributor system.
