How does HMA and BWC relate to one another?

In road construction, Hot-Mix Asphalt (HMA) is the main material used to build strong, smooth roads. For repairs or upgrades, crews often use a Bonded Wearing Course (BWC)—a thin top layer that helps protect and extend the life of the pavement. Before laying this layer, a special glue-like emulsion is sprayed on the road. When the hot asphalt is placed on top, the emulsion soaks upward into it, bonding the layers tightly together. This creates a durable surface that resists cracking and water damage. This whole process only takes about 15 minutes, and traffic can return as normal.
