Overview

Project Overview

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is upgrading lane striping on Bangerter Highway as part of a statewide initiative to improve pavement markings on major roads. This project is included in UDOT’s enhanced freeway striping program, which aims to improve the performance of lane marking on high-traffic corridors and across various driving conditions. Crews are installing contrast “tiger tail” striping, featuring alternating white and black lines that are 50% wider than standard striping to increase lane marking visibility. Beyond visual improvements, the project helps UDOT evaluate durable striping materials and technologies that offer clearer guidance for drivers and greater long-term reliability.

Why This Matters

In conditions where standard striping is harder to see, including at night, in rain, or on wet pavement. The new “tiger tail” pattern is easier to see in those conditions, helping lane lines remain more visible when drivers need that guidance most.

This project addresses evolving roadway needs; the increased contrast benefits both human drivers and autonomous vehicle sensors and cameras, making the improvement relevant for current and emerging vehicle technologies. The Bangerter work supports UDOT’s statewide effort to enhance pavement marking visibility, reliability, and performance in ways drivers experience daily.
