Traffic shift on I-15 NB at 5600 South (SR–97)

Crews are moving into phase three of construction. Traffic will be shifting onto the new northbound bridge structure on I-15 at 5600 South. To implement the shift, I-15 NB will be reduced to one lane during overnight hours 7 p.m. - 5 a.m. on Friday, May 17, and Saturday, May 18.* Traffic will be shifted into a one lane configuration to accommodate moving barrier, adding new roadway striping and removing/relocating overhead signage. Drivers should expect delays.

Nightwork along 5600 South 

The 5600 South Improved Mobility project, in partnership with Roy City, is installing a new waterline along 5600 South. To minimize impacts to water service, this work is taking place during nighttime hours (7 p.m. – 5 a.m.). This work will be a moving operation and take place in various locations throughout the corridor. Work is expected to continue through summer 2024.*

What to expect: 

• Noise, dust, vibration, and nighttime lighting 
• One-way traffic operations with flaggers 
• Construction vehicles and crew members in the area

Upcoming Work

Closure at DR&G Pedestrian Trail near 2700 W

Crews will close a section of the DR&G trail from 5600 South to 5200 South as early as Monday, May 20* to accommodate building of the new pedestrian bridge structure. The closure will be in place through late 2024. Pedestrians are asked to detour to 2700 West.

Freeway Park Dr. and Ritter Dr. Intersection

Crews will be completing waterline and vault prep work at the Freeway Park Dr. and Ritter Dr. intersection at the end of the month. This work will impact drivers utilizing this area for approximately 2–weeks.* Drivers can expect one-way flagging operations, and signage for alternate routes during this work.

Exit 338: I-15 NB to 5600 S. / Riverdale Rd

Exit has south to the newly constructed ramp location this week.

Work on and around the ramp will continue. Drivers can expect minimal delays.

Along 5600 South (SR–97)

Third–party utility work is taking place along 5600 South (SR–97) on the north and south sides in park strips at intermittent locations. Some properties along the corridor may be in a Public Utility Easement (PUE). This easement ensures that vital services, such as power lines, water pipes, gas lines and communication cables can be accessed and maintained efficiently.

Restoration work will be happening as utility work progresses through early summer. Please contact the project team if you have any questions.

Ongoing Work

I-15 NB CD Structure at 5600 South (SR-97)

Crews will continue wall construction work that includes backfilling, forming the approach slabs along with finishing completing pouring activities on the deck of the Collector Distributor (CD) Bridge.

5600 South (SR-97)

Utility and drainage work along the south side of 5600 South will continue intermittently throughout the corridor.

Along 5600 South, crews will continue setting retaining panels around the UPRR (Union Pacific Railroad) bridge and along the north side at 2300 W for the next few weeks. Drivers can expect lane shifts, one-way flagging operations, adjacent cross street closures, and short-term delays along the corridor.

Did you hear about the 5600 South project in the news?

UDOT and the project team collaborated with community partners and celebrated National Work Zone Awareness Week at Roy Elementary by hosting a safety assembly and activities for K–6th grade and made sure to "Go Orange" on April 17. Go Orange Day is especially important to the families of victims who have lost their lives in the work zones.

As young individuals, it is important to understand the potential hazards in construction work zones and how to stay safe. Some work zone safety tips that were shared with the students:

• Always be aware of your surroundings and listen to instructions from a trusted adult
• Look left, look right, look left again; make eye contact with drivers
• Avoid playing or running near construction equipment and vehicles, and never touch or climb on them
• Always wear bright and visible clothing to increase your visibility to drivers

Pedestrian Safe Walking Routes Update

Crews have implemented an addition to the safe walking route from 2700 W to 2425 W, along 5600 South to accommodate bridge reconstruction on the north side of the UPRR bridge. Demolitions has began, please plan accordingly. This addition to the route will be in place through Fall 2024.

Drivers: Slow down and be aware of the suggested safe walking routes along 5600 South. Be alert and watch for students traveling along the corridor.

For everyone's safety, please do not enter the work areas and stay away from equipment.

Ongoing Corridor Activities

Right-of-Way Acquisition and Demolition

Demolition work on UDOT acquired properties along 5600 South will continue. This work will take place during daytime hours. Surrounding areas can expect noise, dust, vibration, heavy equipment, and workers at each location. Short-term shoulder closures may be implemented to assist demolition equipment entering and exiting the area.

*Properties awaiting demolition are secured and routinely monitored for safety and security purposes. Trespassing will be prosecuted.
