Construction Update | April 2, 2026

Overnight Closure at I-15 & 5600 South (SR-97) – April 10

Crews will close the roadway beneath I-15 at 5600 South (SR-97), and all the interchange on/off ramps on Friday, April 10 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. to prepare for the opening of the SPUI interchange in it's final configuration. Drivers should plan ahead and use alternate routes.

A SPUI (Single-Point Urban Interchange) is designed to move traffic more efficiently by allowing all left turns at the interchange to be controlled by a single traffic signal.

See detour information below.

Nightly Closures at I-15 SB On/Off Ramps in Roy & Riverdale

Crews will close the I-15 Southbound on-ramp and auxilliary lane in Riverdale and the I-15 Southbound 5600 South off-ramp in Roy nightly from April 6-8 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night for pavement grinding activities. All ramps and lanes will reopen by approximately 7 a.m. on Thursday, April 9. Plan and ahead and use alternate routes.

Detour Information:

  • To exit I-15 Southbound to Roy:
    • Use I-15 to Riverdale Rd./5600 South via I-84 East (Exit 340)

Upcoming and Ongoing Work

Along 5600 South & Freeway Park Corridor

Crews will continue installing fencing throughout the corridor this month, including around drainage ponds, along Freeway Park Dr., and the east side of I-15. Work on Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) walls will also continue. These are reinforced walls that hold the ground in place to keep roads and ramps stable and safe.

Crews are completing concrete flatwork near the Dilly Dally's business near 1900 West to 5600 South and 2700 West. This work includes removal and replacement of curb, gutter and sidewalk. Drivers should expect minimal delays and business access will be maintained.

Additional work will take place at the drainage pond near Lindquist Mortuary in mid-April, including underground tie-ins (UTB), which connect storm water and drainage systems to the new infrastructure, along with nearby property and parcel cleanup. Crews will also continue lighting and meter relocations throughout April, with ongoing signage installation across the corridor.

A cement mixer truck is positioned in the roadway, with traffic barrels and construction cones separating lanes. Cars wait at traffic lights in the background under a clear sky, with mountains visible in the distance. PIN 16391

Driver & Pedestrian Notice:

Drivers and pedestrians may notice intermittent construction activities as crews coordinate work around weather conditions and specialized operations. Traffic control devices, including barrels, will remain staged throughout the project area to maintain safe traffic patterns, protect work zones, and allow crews to mobilize quickly when conditions allow–even during periods when active construction is not taking place.

Construction activities will continue to shift throughout the project area as crews complete as much work as possible during winter conditions. Drivers and pedestrians are encouraged to use caution, plan for extra travel time, and follow posted signage and traffic control measures.

Ongoing Activities

Lane Closure – 1900 West & 5600 South Intersection

Earlier this month, crews closed a lane and implemented intermittent business access restrictions along 1900 West. A westbound right-turn lane closure at the 5600 South intersection will remain in place through early April while crews complete curb and sidewalk work.

The right-turn movement is shifted into the thru lane to maintain traffic flow. Business access continue to be maintained throughout this work. Drivers can expect a temporary pattern and delays during peak travel times.

I-15 Lane Closures & Shifts

Crews will complete nighttime intermittent lane shifts and closures on I-15 in both northbound and southbound directions through early April for profile and concrete grinding activities. During this work, traffic will shift to the three middle lanes. Pavement grinding smooths the concrete surface to improve the ride quality for drivers.

Plan ahead and expect delays during peak travel times.

3100 West & 5600 South – Signal Prep and Activation

Crews completed installation activities that include steel signal arms and activating the traffic signal at 3100 West and 5600 South through April. The signal will initially operate on a temporary timer until full signal connectivity is established along the corridor from 3500 West to 1900 West along 5600 South.

Permanent coordination and connectivity with the other traffic signals along the corridor is anticipated to be completed this summer. Drivers should expect possible delays and intermittent backups during peak travel times while the signal operates on temporary timing

Final Paving Resumes This Spring on 5600 South & 1900 West

Crews will complete the remaining paving work in the spring, once warmer temperatures return. Asphalt paving requires  specific temperature conditions to ensure long-lasting, high-quality results. While drivers may notice unfinished areas near 1900 West and 5600 South intersection, this work is intentional and temporary.

Why Paving Waits for Warmer Weather

Asphalt is produced at facilities called hot plants, where aggregates (rock and sand) are heated and mixed with liquid asphalt binder. This material must stay hot from the plant to the roadway so it can be properly placed, compacted, and bonded. Completing this work during the winter months can lead to cracks, poor compaction, and a shorter pavement lifespan. UDOT crews source asphalt from certified local hot plants that meet quality and safety standards, ensuring roads are built to last once conditions are right. Waiting for spring temperatures helps deliver smoother, safer, and more durable roads for Utah drivers.
