Project Overview

The Utah Department of Transportation will improve the SR-224 and Ute Boulevard Intersection beginning Monday, June 15. Improvements made to the intersection will include:

  • Dual left-turn lanes for northbound and southbound traffic

  • Modifications to the traffic signal to accommodate the additional turn lanes

Benefits of these changes included enhanced intersection throughput, congestion relief, and increased safety. The dedicated right-turn lanes for northbound and southbound traffic, as well as the lane configurations for eastbound and westbound traffic, will be maintained. There are no anticipated impacts to utilities and adjacent property owners. 

These improvements were designed to minimize rework in two years when the intersection will be updated per the selected alternative of the Kimball Junction Environmental Impact Statement. For more information please visit kimballjunctioneis.udot.utah.gov.

Construction: Summer - Fall 2026

Construction began Monday night, June 15

Project Activities:

  • Our crews will pave new asphalt along the newly widened east side of the road on Friday and Saturday nights, July 17 and July 18. The northbound right-turn lane from SR-224 to Ute Boulevard will be closed through this activity. Work is taking place from 9 p.m. through 6 a.m.
  • Sunday night, July 19, crews will remove the northbound lane striping and spray new paint lines for the new northbound traffic pattern with dual-left turns to westbound Ute Boulevard. Motorists are advised to slow down and pay attention to traffic control and pavement markings.
  • Monday night, July 20, the median island will be removed. During this work motorists can expect the inside northbound lane to be closed.
  • Beginning as early as Tuesday night, July 21, the project will begin excavation along the west side of SR-224 in preparation for widening.
